World News: Sat nav improves driving and traffic safety, says Dutch research

At last: A research report that the sat nav industry wants to hear.

According to research conducted by Dutch research institute TNO, satellite navigation devices have a positive influence on driving and traffic safety.

Key findings of the report indicate that the use of a satellite navigation system raises alertness and reduces driver stress levels.

The report also found that when driving in or to unfamiliar territory, drivers using satellite navigation devices stop 25% less frequently and make 50% fewer driving mistakes than those without sat nav.

Furthermore, drivers who do not have the use of a satellite navigation solution submit 12% more damage claims to their vehicles than those who do have sat nav.

In order to determine the answer to the central question, “What are the effects of navigation systems on traffic safety?”, the research used three elements: a user survey; damage database analysis; and test drives.

Commissioned by Aon, Athlon Car Lease, Delta Lloyd (part of Aviva Plc) and TomTom. the research program was conducted in The Netherlands over a six-month period, and was completed in December 2006.
