World News: Nav device shipments to show 22.5% CAGR to 2012, says ABI

According to ABI Research, shipments of navigation devices worldwide will continue to increase from 2007 to 2012, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.5%.

Europe will command a 53% share of the global market in 2007, and will remain the primary navigation devices market throughout the forecast period.

However, with a CAGR of 27%, the Asian market shows the most rapid growth

PND sales have increased rapidly in recent years, with more than 29 million PNDs being shipped during 2007, primarily due to high growth rates in both the North American and European markets.

In Asia, in-car navigation systems are the major navigation products, mainly due to the high penetration rate of OEMs in Japan.“With the development of LBS, more and more value-added navigation services have been launched with GPS-enabled PDAs and smartphones,” said research analyst Wang Tao, adding that PNDs will face a new challenge from GPS-enabled mobile devices.

Tao said that in 2012, GPS-enabled PDAs and smartphones will comprise 23% of all navigation device shipments.”

Research director Mike Ippoliti adds: “The PND form-factor has many advantages, and will not be pushed aside by handset-based navigation services.”
