The European Court of Justice (ECJ) Gender Ruling Shakes Up European Insurance Telematics

Until relatively recently, the phrases ‘gender equality’ and ‘insurance telematics’ weren’t often heard in the same sentence. But since the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in favor of the Belgian consumer group Test-Achats, declaring that “taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination,” the two terms are frequently used together. The ruling, which came into effect on Dec. 21, 2012, removed a previous exemption for insurers from EU. laws prohibiting gender discrimination. As a result the opportunity for telematics companies to enter the market is huge. At the same time insurers must establish strategic partnerships to prepare for the gender ruling and enable them to offer customer friendly products and services.

Ruthana Foulkes, insurance telematics project director explains how important it is for new players, as well as those more established in the industry to get ‘clued-up’ on insurance telematics.  ‘At our recent Insurance Telematics Europe Conference in London we saw the likes of Allianz, Autoline, Confused.com, Zurich and Ford join our delegation. It is clear that telematics has firmly made its way into the strategies of key insurance companies and those who are not scoping out the space could get left behind’.
