Telematics Update talks to Dave Cozzens, CEO of Telogis

What does your company do?

Telogis provides a location-based services platform that companies around the world are leveraging to improve their businesses. Our products and services are used and distributed in over 60 countries worldwide, which makes us one of the only truly global location platforms.

We have a number of solutions that enable companies to maximize the productivity of their mobile assets and workforces. These productivity gains come from more efficient routing and scheduling, monitoring of vehicle and driver location and performance, and automation of processes. To provide these benefits, we have five offerings:

Telogis Fleet, a GPS-based fleet productivity and management platform. It is a scalable, easy-to-use, Software as a Service (SaaS) solution for enterprise fleets. Its ease of use has allowed Telogis Fleet to achieve a significantly high adoption rate in the fleet management arena. Telogis Fleet enables customers to improve productivity and reduce operating costs by providing secure, remote access to real-time GPS vehicle and driver information.

Telogis GeoBase, a market-leading geospatial platform and mapping solution for application developers, systems integrators, enterprise users and other peers, including telematics OEMs.

Telogis Route, a SaaS-based multiple vehicle route optimization and planning solution. Customers benefit by reduced transportation costs, improved customer service, and improved operational efficiencies.

Telogis Mobile, powered by Telogis Fleet, is a wireless, workforce automation solution that connects workers in the field to their back office through two-way messaging, forms, work orders, and navigation.

Telogis Live, a connected access portal that allows organizations to view vehicles from a number of operators’ fleets on a single screen. This portal is particularly useful for situations such as disaster response, so that utilities can clearly see the locations of multiple vendors’ vehicles, to accurately track and manage resources from a single interface.

How do you differentiate your offerings from your competitors?

Telogis is a premium provider in the marketplace. Our extensive investments in research and development have created one of the most scalable and reliable platforms in the industry. Our solutions can scale to any size fleet and are built to not only work well together but also to seamlessly integrate with our customers’ existing technology investments.

Secondly, our solutions are extremely intuitive and allow our customers to manage large amounts of data efficiently and effectively, which leads to rapid user adoption. Finally, our solutions are completely Web-based, leveraging the best of SaaS and cloud computing. This, in combination with our best-in-class implementation services team, allows our customers to quickly deploy all of our solutions, providing a more rapid return on investment as compared to other solutions in the marketplace.

What partnerships are you currently forging? What industry milestone did you recently achieve?

We have long-standing partnerships with many of the best companies in the telematics industry, including NAVTEQ and Tele Atlas as well as AT&T and Verizon. In addition, we are building partnerships with other technology providers, such as Oracle and Microsoft, to ensure that we continue to provide an open platform for integration into our customers’ legacy systems. As a company with a phenomenal growth rate (500 percent between 2005 and 2008), we’re constantly reaching new milestones, which creates a great buzz around the company. In 2009 alone, we were recognized as one of the fastest growing companies by Inc. Magazine and Deloitte, and two of our founders, Newth Morris and Jason Koch, were recognized in OC Metro’s “40 under 40” list. We also won several awards for our platform solutions and quality customer service. As you can see, it’s really exciting times for us.

Which trends will impact the industry the most in the coming years and why?

The market is maturing, as are the solutions. Customers are much more sophisticated than they once were. We find customers are asking for the next level of ROI.

In addition to operational efficiencies, customers are looking for safety, diagnostic, and green data (such as carbon footprint). They are looking for business intelligence tools that make the data meaningful and useful. Finally, they want to integrate the concept of location into their existing business processes and technology investments.
