Magellan sells consumer products division to MiTac

The transaction is expected to close in January 2009.

The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

The Magellan consumer products division created the Magellan RoadMate® and MaestroTM series portable car navigation systems, and the Magellan Triton® outdoor handheld navigation devices.

Magellan's devices are top sellers in the US and Canada, not least due to the company's extensive advertising campaign.

According to Twice Mobile, during the twelve-month period ending September 2008, Magellan ranked 3rd on the list of ‘most-advertised PND brands' in the US and Canada, accounting for 18.6% of the total share of advertised models. The top four brands were Garmin, TomTom, Magellan and Mio, in that order.

Among the ten most-advertised PND models during the same period, Magellan's Roadmate-1200 was 4th and the Maestro-4250 was 6th.
