Locale adds Skyhook Wireless for better location on Android

With the standard Android OS location platform being notoriously unreliable, Android developers are increasingly using Skyhook to improve their location-aware applications.

"Getting an accurate location fix using the Android location APIs requires a lot of battery power and only works outdoors," says Carter Jernigan, founder of two forty four a.m. "As soon as the phone steps indoors, location accuracy could be off by a mile. So we integrated with Skyhook for hybrid positioning that's more accurate, faster and requires less power." He added that users have noticed the dramatic improvement.

Kate Imbach, director of marketing at Skyhook Wireless, points out that location often determines how we want our phones to behave.

For instance, at the office you might want your incoming call alerts to switch to vibrate, and at home you might want calls forwarded to your landline. Locale automates these location-sensitive settings.

Locale can be downloaded via the Android Market on any Android device, and Skyhook Wireless offers a publicly available SDK for Android developers.
