GM’s Cruise Enters AV Grocery Delivery Battle

General Motors’ Cruise autonomous vehicles subsidiary is entering the growing market for AV food and grocery delivery services.

Following Ford‘s trialing of such services in Florida and Nuro‘s deployment of them in Arizona, Cruise is partnering with delivery start-up DoorDash to deliver food and groceries to customers in San Francisco. DoorDash says it wants to use Cruise’s AVs to try and deliver food to its customers more quickly.

The companies say they want to use the trial “to evaluate and develop safety, operational, and other learnings”. Cruise CEO Dan Ammann claimed the move would “provide us with critical learnings … as we prepare to commercialize our AV technology and transform transportation”.

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu added: “We see AVs playing a major role in the future of delivery as consumer behaviors continue to shift online, and we are confident Cruise’s leading technology will help us scale to meet growing consumer demand”.
