Fleets Plug into the Connected World as International Trade Grows

International trade in terms of tonnage for USA is forecast to grow at a rate of 3.4 % per year between 2007 and 2040 (USDOT). This growth means that the fleet industry cannot ignore the efficiency that telematics and connectivity can bring to fleets, that otherwise may not be able to cope with the increased demand. This presents a huge opportunity for stakeholders in the telematics and technology sector to tap into the market.
Nick Ehrhart, Vice President of Business Development at Donlen remarks that he sees a very bright future for telematics in commercial vehicles in the United States: “Today there’s a 20 percent penetration rate, but it’s growing rapidly.”
“There is more and more interest from fleets that previously said we’re not going to do it. Eventually all fleets are going to have it. ”
The Connected Fleets USA 2014 Conference & Exhibition in Atlanta, November, will analyse fleet leasing companies and the deeper involvement of OEMs in connected fleets. Sessions will also cover enterprise integration and the capabilities of V2X tech to enhance fuel economy, driver management and other important factors for fleet managers. These advances in connected technology will enable fleets that are geared up to increase productivity and capitalize on the increases in international trade in an efficient manner. In turn, fleets will become an integral part of smarter transport infrastructures.
Erhart continued “As more and more megacities spring up, the challenge will be how to integrate the different modes of transport by using the vast amounts of data more effectively.”
