Europe News: ViaMichelin to pull out of GPS market

Reports have surfaced that France’s ViaMichelin plans to stop production of its own PND products.

According to La Tribune, ViaMichelin only captured 14% of its domestic market, and even less elsewhere.

www.trustedreviews.com suggests that ViaMichelin has paid the price for not finding a true differentiator. Whilst the integration of its parent's Michelin Guide was attractive, it wasn’t enough to pose any serious competition to the likes of TomTom, Garmin and Navman.

And with GPS technology being integrated into more and more mobile phones, the market for dedicated devices is likely to shrink, creating even more intense competition.

To date, ViaMichelin has declined to comment.
