Europe News: More Th>n launches GPS- based eco-insurance

More Th>n, the direct arm of Royal & SunAlliance (R&SA), has announced a telematics car insurance policy that uses GPS technology to help people drive in a greener way and save money on fuel.

Customers buying car insurance via the ‘We’re In This Together’ website will be given a GPS telematics device for their cars that will monitor how green their driving behaviour is.

The system will also send them regular reports, along with tips to help them drive more efficiently.

The system will measure behaviour such as the number of short journeys made, excessive speeding, over-revving, over-acceleration, and idling time.

Apart from encouraging greener driving habits, the device should also help people to save money by reducing fuel costs and wear and tear on vehicles and tyres.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, “greener” driving can result in fuel savings of around £120 per year.

The new eco product will be launched as a pilot in the last quarter of this year, with up to 1,000 free-of charge boxes available in 2007.

If successful, More Th>n will look to expand the scheme in 2008.
