Asia News: Toyota to launch telematics service in China in early-2009

Toyota has revealed plans to implement a telematics service in China in 2009, which will include services such as an operator service, emergency notification, and traffic information.

According to Shigeki Tomoyama, general manager of e-Toyota Division, research shows that the demand for security and emergency notification in greater in China than Japan.

For the telematics service trial on public roads, traffic information based on data gathered from approximately 10,000 taxis operating in Beijing was merged with Toyota’s own supplemental data to provide alternate routes to avoid traffic congestion.

China’s automobile market continues to expand. Large cities such as Shanghai and Beijing – with 60,000 taxis operating in the latter – are particularly troubled by chronic traffic congestion, and traffic accidents are becoming a serious issue.
