America News: NY cabbies threaten to strike over GPS legislation

New York’s taxi drivers are threatening to strike over new legislation that requires the installation of GPS in cabs – not for navigation purposes, but purely for cab tracking.

According to the New York Sun, the city’s cab drivers consider the tracking system to be an infringement on their privacy rights.

Although the Taxi & Limousine Commission says the tracking devices will be used only to reunite passengers with belongings left behind in taxis, drivers fear that it will be used to prosecute them for traffic violations.

About 7,000 cabbies represented by the Taxi Workers Alliance are reported to be in discussions about possible strike action.
