World News:  Smartphones to give GPS devices serious competition

According to a Business Week report, navigation device makers will have to offer new services such as pay-as-you-go, traffic info, and parking-space availability if they want to compete with smartphones.

Strategy Analytics recently reported that around sixteen million GPS-enabled smart phones will be shipped worldwide in 2010, forcing sat nav to come up with new innovative services to retain their share in the market for inexpensive basic map-based offerings.

However, while millions of mobile GPS units will be shipped in the future, dedicated portable devices will still rule the market, with an estimated 42.4 million navigation devices predicted to be shipped in 2010.
