World News: In-dash GPS is overpriced and overrated

According to a recent opinion piece in Conde Nast Traveller, an in-dash GPS navigation system is the silliest expensive option you can buy in a new car.
The writer doesn’t knock the usefulness of GPS, just the price and sophistication level of the in-car system compared with the many portable aftermarket alternatives.
The article points out that it can take up to three years for an OEM to design and engineer the installation of whichever GPS receiver and display it selects for its vehicle(s). By the time the vehicle comes to market, hand-held GPS technology has raced ahead and is two generations in front of the in-car system.
