World News:  Big year ahead for mobile GPS, says AT&T

Mobile phone services that offer directions and other location-based services will be huge in 2008, says Mark Collins, vice president of consumer data services for AT&T.

Collins says that AT&T is finishing up network upgrades that will allow the company to launch location-based services in the first quarter of 2008. He expects AT&T’s major US competitors, including Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile to amp up their mapping-related offerings as well.

Collins also suggests that cellphone-based services would eventually render in-car navigation systems obsolete.

Really? A GPS-enabled mobile phone is better than nothing, but it’s unlikely that consumers will decline an in-car sat nav system in favour of the comparatively tiny screen you get with a mobile phone.
