VW Joins Open-Source Connected Vehicle Software Project

A project developing a Linux-based open-source platform for connected vehicle software has been boosted by the addition of Volkswagen to its membership base.

The automaker has joined Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a project of the Linux Foundation developing a platform for telematics, infotainment, and instrument clusters. Mitsubishi, Toyota, Mazda, and Mercedes-Benz are among the project’s current members. According to an AGL statement, the move forms part of VW’s efforts to transition from automaker “to mobility provider”.

It added that VW would “become a member of the development community for the common automotive Linux platform”. Volkswagen open source specialist Oliver Hartkopp said: “The open-source approach provides excellent software solutions that are suitable to enable a long-term support of software … to ensure robust and secure solutions for our customers we want to be in close connection with the community to be able to directly interact with developers and maintainers”.
