Faster Forward: Connecting NYC’s Informal Network of “Dollar Vans”

An estimated 600,000 New Yorkers live in a transit desert, effectively cut off from the city center. In response, these predominantly low-income neighborhoods created their own ad hoc solution – an informal network of “dollar vans” helping to bridge the transport gap for under served areas. Dollar vans, at some points considered illegal by city transit authorities but things have changed: drivers are licensed and a start-up wants to bring dollar vans from a solely cash-based economy into the online era with an app called Dollaride. The company’s founder, Su Sanni, appeared on a “tech talk” panel presented by sponsored by the NYU Tandon School of Engineering at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.
