Video: TomTom on the future of connected navigation

In this video from Telematics Munich 2013, Jan-Maarten de Vries, vice president, product management and marketing, automotive, TomTom, discusses four trends shaping the future of connected navigation.
First, he expects strong growth in hybrid navigation systems, which combine remote servers providing data and real-time services with an in-car embedded component maintaining functionality when there is no connectivity. Second, he discusses how navigation will evolve to span the entire journey – from planning on a home computer to using a smartphone app to find the final destination. Third, he talks about connected navigation becoming much more personalized, based on the driver’s habits and activities. Fourth, he predicts a time when connected navigation, with its various real-time data streams, will start to enhance onboard ADAS.
Looking further ahead, he sees connected navigation beginning to integrate with a much wider range of connected systems, such as public transportation, city traffic management and pollution control.
“With the rise of megacities and the emergence of connected cars, and also hybrid navigation, opportunities arise for integrating all that information in a much better way,” he says. “And then, if you combine that with the fact that also objects will become connected – so not only the car will become connected to the Internet, but also the infotainment system may be connected to back-end systems from government and municipalities – it opens opportunities for managing traffic situations and pollution on a much wider scale. … So longer term, I definitely see opportunities for managing multimodal in a more sophisticated way and also [using it to] solve problems at society level, like pollution and congestion, in a much better way."
