Video: Ford on the future of V2V/V2I in Europe

In this video from Telematics Munich 2013, Christian Ress, technical expert on connectivity, driver assistance & active safety, Ford, talks to TU's Jan Stojaspal about plans in Europe to take vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V)/vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication live in 2015.

According to him, the Car 2 Car Communication Consortium, which Ford recently joined, is committed to the start of voluntary deployment of V2V/V2I, known together as V2X, from 2015, and so is a variety of public authorities. The governments of The Netherlands, Germany and Austria have, for example, agreed to launch the Cooperative ITS Corridor, a V2I-based roadwork warning information system on motorways connecting Rotterdam with Vienna, via Frankfurt.

Collaboration of the private and public sectors will be crucial to the success of V2X communication, particularly in the early days of adoption when drivers will largely experience it through projects like the Cooperative ITS Corridor, according to Ress. Once V2X penetration rises, it will be possible to deploy more safety-related V2V applications, such as electronic brake light or intersection movement assist.

“We can launch the next generation of adaptive cruise control on our own as Ford, but, for cooperative systems – we call these car-to-X-based systems – we really need to team up with other partners,” Ress says. “We need to team up with the other OEMs to define common standards, and we have made good progress here. We need to team up with the suppliers. We need to team up with the universities to do some further research. And we need to team up with the public authorities because it will only work if everyone works together on the same goal, [which is] improving traffic safety and efficiency for [the kind of] challenging mobility we expect in the future.”
