The Future of Telematics in India Thrashed Out at Telematics India & South Asia Conference

The 17th April marked a turning point in the telematics calendar in India as 100+ automotive and telematics executives attended the first ever Telematics India & South Asia Conference hosted by Telematics Update. With figure heads of the industry such as Chandrika Shetty, VGT Head India, Volvo India Private Limited and dynamic panel sessions featuring DELPHI, Visteon and Harman stealing the show it’s clear that telematics deployment and expansion strategies in India is at the top of the agenda for automakers, fleets and the rest of the value chain – with international players taking their share of the market too.

Telematics Update’s Managing Director, Precksha Saksena-Sood, moderated several of the panel sessions and commented on how telematics has gained momentum in India and what could be the catalyst to its deployment. “India represents the world’s second largest mobile phone market and the world’s third largest mass of internet users. Rates for data and talk time are the cheapest in the world, further stoking mobile use. Integrating car services with mobile is therefore an opportunity.”

On a more granular level, other than the growth of auto consumers in India, safety and security was noted as the crux of potential telematics growth in India as well as insurance. Ideas and Innovation Squared Technology, Keltron and Chleon were amongst those to emphasize the point; as well as the opportunity it provides for hardware and software suppliers to enter the market. Another exciting angle for India is the potential of mainstream infotainment. Precksha Saksena-Sood Managing Director of Telematics Update led a panel on how services such as navigation can be ‘Indianized.’
