Telematics Update talks to Per Simonsen, CEO of Telenor Connexion

What does your company do?

Telenor Connexion is a mobile operator specializing in embedded connectivity solutions on a global basis.

How do you differentiate your offerings from your competitors?

We have built a complete organization, technology platform and service portfolio based on the fact that we are getting integrated into more business- and life-critical customer solutions. For example, we are part of e-call solutions; we operate connectivity for remote monitoring of cardiac arrhythmia patients; we are connecting fire alarms and securing connectivity for large-scale global fleet management solutions.
All have one thing in common – reliability and quality of service is imperative. The ‘best effort’ mindset within the traditional telecom sector is simply not enough. We want to provide the next generation of embedded connectivity services, built to secure that our customers are always connected.
We are part of Telenor Group, the sixth largest operator in the world, but we have seen the need to separate our business and organization from the traditional mobile services to solely focus on meeting the new demands coming from embedding connectivity in various machines, devices, and vehicles. We take an end-to-end approach to enhance every aspect of connectivity. This means supporting our customers from initial technical design to customizing SIM products for industrial environments to testing and validating the complete connected product before deployment.
In the operational phase, we provide real-time access to monitor operational status and remotely manage all customer units. All units are monitored 24/7 by dedicated experts and we have alarm triggers on SIM-level to detect any abnormal behavior. Routines and processes are tailored to fit business-critical operations.
In summary, we have built a completely new offering, technology, and mindset around the new business and technology logics of embedded connectivity.

What partnerships are you currently forging?

One of the most important differences in M2M and telematics solutions is that the connectivity solution in most cases is getting integrated into the product in the production stage. Products and vehicles are then distributed, sold, and used all across the globe. National borders are of less importance and we try to follow our customers and provide reliable connectivity solutions wherever they are.
Securing a best-in-class global offering is therefore vital and we are continuously adding new mobile partner networks to our 400+ existing network. Coverage is, of course, vital but equally important is to continuously enhance quality of service and set new routines and standards securing mobile connectivity across global networks.
We are also continuing to build strong partnerships across the industry value chains, such as system integrators, module manufacturers, and telematics service providers.

Which trends will impact the industry the most in the coming years and why?

The market is maturing overall; hyped projections are being replaced with actual deployments. In the coming years, we will also see strong drivers from society in utilizing embedded connectivity in various solutions, for example, by decreasing environmental impact through implementation of smart transportation solutions, enhancing safety in traffic through e-call deployments, and generating energy savings through the implementation of smart grids.
In our vision, anything that can be connected will be connected, so standardization efforts and development of industry initiatives, such as common frameworks for how to optimize usage of mobile networks, will also help drive the market in the right direction.
Overall, embedded connectivity is moving from technical trials to strategic investments, in many cases enabling totally new opportunities for additional revenue and/or cost savings for our customers. Connectivity is becoming one integrated part of our customers’ product offering, and as mobile operators we need to stay flexible while maintaining our focus on providing the most reliable services on a global basis.
