Telematics Update: Has Telematics in India Reached its Tipping Point?

Over 65% of freight and 87% of passenger traffic in India is supported by this road network and is expected to grow by over 14% per annum, supporting that automotive telematics does have a role in India.

Telematics technology offers several benefits to the commercial and consumer automotive industry. For example, the Indian and South Asian market has some of the highest theft and fuel pilferage rates in the world.

The security services that telematics technology can provide will help overcome this challenge. This focus on security has created a demand for additional value added services such as navigation and infotainment, both in the consumer and commercial automotive market.

"Whilst telematics is not new to the Indian and South Asian industry, I think we have reached a tipping point, and with automaker interest, public sector support, and the number of  organisations competing to grab a share of the market opportunity, I think there will be a lot to look out for.” – Shreya Ganapathy, Project Director, Telematics Update.

Telematics is a largely untapped market in this region. Telematics systems connect people in cars with external service providers.  These external services include driving aids, trip planning, accident prevention, notification systems, security, navigation based on GPS pinpointed location, in-car internet and infotainment.

It is critical for all the telematics players to understand how they fit into this eco-system. The government, automakers, wireless carriers, and tier onemanufacturers need region specific knowledge to visualise business models, technology and strategy developments in this field in order to design products and timelines in-line with the current trends.

To help these players put their finger on the pulse of telematics in India, Telematics Update’s Telematics India and South Asia Conference 2013 will bring together these decision makers, allowing the entire value chain to gain insights into different strategies and capitalise on this dynamic market.
