smart Sends Yet Another Electric SUV to Market

Micro-car manufacturer, smart, has decided the time is right to offer an already SUV crowded BEV market another soft-roader.

It has published disguised pictures of its new compact SUV it will be officially unveiling on April 7. The dedicated reveal event takes place in the brand’s trademark urban style at STATION-Berlin, a landmark disused train station in the German capital, and builds on last year’s reveal of the concept #1 showcar.

The smart #1 is the inaugural product of the new joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely Automobile, reflecting the brand’s vision of the best solutions for future urban mobility. As part of the partnerships, the smart #1 has recently completed extensive pre-production testing in northern China, with its battery and technology systems being put to the ultimate test in -40°C temperatures.

The smart Europe team is also supporting testing and local homologation through the original smart research and development center in Renningen, Germany. The team, led by Tilo Schweers, vice-president of R&D, are putting the smart #1 through its final testing.

David Browne, smart UK CEO, said: “This is a truly exciting time for the smart brand. The upcoming reveal of the smart #1 is a key milestone in the evolution of our brand, reflecting our history of innovation, outstanding design and space efficiency.”
