Renegade First Electrified Jeep to Hit Europe

Jeep will bring its first electrified product to Europe in the shape of a plug-in hybrid version of its Renegade.

The Renegade 4xe features a powertrain that integrates two electric motors and an 11.4 kWh battery pack, with a diminutive four-cylinder 1.3-liter turbo gasoline engine and a six-speed automatic transmission. It houses an electric motor and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack on the rear axle and its internal combustion engine and another electric motor fitted on the front axle. The ICE element boasts two power outputs of either 126bhp or 176bhp and 199ft-lbs of torque assisted by an electric motor that can act as a high-voltage generator.

The gasoline engine is entirely made of aluminum for lightness weighing in at just 106kg (233lbs). The crankcase is made of high-pressure die-cast aluminum alloy. After studying various crankcase designs, a bedplate architecture was chosen, to offer the best balance of weight, structural performance, noise, and vibrations. Like all turbocharged versions in the GSE powertrain family, it includes Fiat’s third-generation MultiAir technology that improves combustion by adjusting valve lift and timing.

The Renegade 4xe’s second electric motor on the rear axle features reduction gear and integrated differential (e-axle). It delivers 57bhp and 184ft-lbs of torque, generating traction and recovering energy while braking. The system claims to travel approximately 26 miles in full-electric mode.

There’s a 400 volt, lithium-ion, nickel-manganese-cobalt, battery pack to power the e-axle and it is located underneath the second row seats. An integrated module for controlling the charging of the high-voltage and conventional 12V batteries of the car which is mounted in the boot. The combined power outputs of the two options equals 186bhp or 236bhp and the vehicle claims a top speed of 124mph and returns 123-134mpg (102-111mpg US) while emitting less than 50g/km of CO2 in Hybrid mode.

It features a choice of three operating modes – Hybrid, Electric and E-save. The desired mode can be activated using the selector switch, located in front of the gear lever. In all driving modes, the regenerative braking system recovers energy during passive driving phases, such as deceleration or light braking. Additionally, the Renegade 4xe travels in hybrid mode when the battery reaches the minimum charge level, regardless of the selected mode.

The automaker claims the plug-in hybrid technology further enhances its off-road capability, with the combination of the two propulsion systems resulting in more torque. The range-topping Trailhawk 4xe, the specialist off-road trim in the high power output powertrain, boasts an increase in torque output up to 50% versus the 166bhp diesel Trailhawk model. Using power from the electric motor on the rear axle allows the two axles to be separated and control the torque independently, with traction being delivered to the rear wheels immediately when needed.
The Jeep Renegade 4xe arrives in showrooms in European in September priced from £32,600 ($41,095) including taxes for a Jeep Renegade 4xe Longitude.
