QNX and Pandora bring Internet radio to the car

Pandora becomes the newest company to contribute to the fast-growing QNX CAR program, which provides automotive manufacturers and tier one suppliers with pre-integrated software and hardware technologies to accelerate product prototyping and reduce engineering costs.

Launched in February 2009, the QNX CAR program offers a comprehensive set of technologies, including a connected application platform, sample applications, reference implementations and a mechanism for delivering software updates and new features to the vehicle.

The application platform now includes integrations with consumer media devices, Bluetooth, content management, Pandora Internet radio, and many other third-party technologies. These integrations can drastically reduce the upfront engineering required needed to initiate a prototyping program, both for OEMs proving out ideas in a lab and for tier one suppliers competing for their next customer win.

"Traditionally, software and silicon vendors have worked loosely together, leaving all the integration work to the tier one supplier," said Tyler Nelson, QNX's vice president of marketing & business development. "By providing pre-assembled reference implementations and third-party technologies such as Pandora Internet radio, QNX CAR allows customers to skip first-level integration efforts and to work immediately on product development and differentiation."

QNX has licensed its technology for use in more than ten million automotive systems, in vehicles from Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Fiat, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Saab, Ssangyong, Toyota, VW and others.

QNX demonstrated a multi-node infotainment system with integrated Pandora support at Telematics Detroit 2009 this week, as well as a digital instrument cluster; and the company's business manager of automotive strategic alliances, Andrew Poliak, participated in the panel Open Platform Technology – Roadmap Ahead.
