Nikola to Showcase Hydrogen-Electric Truck

A truck maker is to showcase a zero-emissions truck at an event it is staging in Arizona.
Nikola says it will display a prototype of the TRE at its Nikola World show in Phoenix next April, along with a truck it has designed and intends to produce called the TWO. The TRE is aimed at the European market, and is expected to enter production circa 2020. The TWO will be displayed “in action pulling loaded trailers”.
Founder and CEO Trevor Milton claimed the TRE “will be the first European zero-emission commercial truck to be delivered with redundant braking, redundant steering, redundant 800Vdc batteries, and a redundant 120kW hydrogen fuel cell, all necessary for true Level 5 autonomy. Expect our production to begin around the same time as our USA version in 2022-2023″.
The company says the truck can run on a single charge for “500 to 1,200 kilometers depending on options”. However, its European charging stations are not expected to become operational until 2022.
Nikola has also announced plans to develop charging infrastructure for the North American market. CFO Kim Brady says the automaker plans to work with Norway’s Nel Hydrogen on designing and producing hydrogen charging stations in the region. It plans to operate over 700 stations across the US and Canada by 2028.
