Hyundai Reveals First Model With Solar Panel Roof

Hyundai has launched its first solar panel roofed vehicle in the shape of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid using a mild hybrid powertrain.
As TU-Automotive reported back in November 2018, the carmaker has been developing vehicle roof panel solar energy harvesting systems it plans to roll out across suitable models. The system claims solar panels are able to increase the range by as much as 807 miles per year assuming it is charged for a minimum of six hours daily. Naturally, the system can recharge the battery with the car on the go depending on ambient daylight conditions.
The car employs a gasoline Smartstream G2.0 GDi HEV engine, developing 147bhp and 138ft-lbs of torque, while its electric motor generates 38kW and 151ft-lbs of torque. This means the combined power of the two is 196bhp, with claimed fuel economy of 112mpg (94mpg US).
