Geely Plans Launch of First 5G/C-V2X Cars

Chinese carmaker Geely plans to launch its first 5G and C-V2X enabled mass market vehicles by 2021.

It is working on the technology with Qualcomm and the Gosunch Group and made the production commitment at the Mobile World Congress. The vehicles will employ 5G and C-V2X products based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon automotive 5G platform through Gosuncn. The move fits with Geely’s four step G-Pilot strategy for autonomous driving published in 2018 accelerating its current Level 2 capability and now targeting Level 3 services with 5G and C-V2X technologies in 2021 for selected brands, which include the Swedish carmaker Volvo.

Geely claims experience in intelligent systems, including front camera, front millimeter wave radar, 12 ultrasonic radars and two 24G rear millimeter wave radars. It anticipates models released in 2021 will increase the demand for 5G and C-V2X being equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving technology.

Shen Ziyu, vice-president of the Geely Research Institute, said: “Future cars will be equipped with T-BOX products that include smart antenna and built-in 5G and C-V2X. It is Geely’s first vehicle model with Level 3 technology and will be a pioneering vehicle model that realizes the 5G network intelligent strategy. Going forward, Geely will also become a proprietary automobile brand with the highest networking rate in China.”
