Game Changing Automotive Apps

In June 2012, Mercedes-Benz launched mbrace2, their telematics system that allows for special versions of popular apps such as Facebook, Yelp and Google Search to be brought into the vehicle. In Europe, Renault has launched the first ever automotive app store allowing drivers to access to a huge list of apps to be brought into the car.

As well as being able to download apps straight into the vehicle Nokia have developed MirrorLink. This system utilizes smartphones to offer connectivity, a more streamlined billing service that “mirrors” the smartphone’s user interface.  Driver centric apps will then be able to connect to the vehicle through MirrorLink and be operable through the dash-board.  

Analyst, Krishna Jayaraman of Frost and Sullivan has noted, “Smartphone-based navigation's success is compelling traditional OEMs to change their business models to incorporate smartphone content replication technologies like MirrorLink.” What is not clear to many of the auto-manufacturers still looking to offer services of their own is how the integration of apps will bring in revenue and help to sell cars.
