Stellantis pledges new business unit will safeguard customer privacy.

Stellantis Venture to Leverage Connected-Vehicle Data

Stellantis expects to have 34 million connected vehicles among its 14 brands by 2030. By leveraging data from those vehicles, Mobilisights will have exclusive access and rights to license vehicle and related data from all Stellantis brands to external customers.

With more than 12 million connected vehicles on the road worldwide, Stellantis has access to a mountain of data and it is creating a new business unit, dubbed Mobilisights, to create new services for customers and revenue for the automaker.

“Harnessed effectively, sensor and other data available from connected vehicles can enable a wide range of services and applications with compelling benefits, ranging from personalized usage-based insurance to road-hazard detection and traffic management,” Mobilisights CEO Sanjiv Ghate says.

“With its 14 iconic brands and millions of connected vehicles, Stellantis has unmatched global data scale capable of powering this business forward.”

Stellantis expects to have 34 million connected vehicles among its 14 brands by the end of the decade. By leveraging data from those vehicles, Mobilisights will have exclusive access and rights to license vehicle and related data from all Stellantis brands to external customers, including other automakers, Stellantis says.

During a roundtable discussion with journalists and analysts at CES 2023, where Stellantis announced the establishment of Mobilisights, Ghate (pictured, below left) says the goal will be to build a robust system capable of capturing revenue from two domains. The first is aggregated data, to guide vehicles through traffic or find parking. The second domain will use data to deliver personalized services such as insurance to customers, he says.

Mobilisights, according to Ghate, expects to work with partners as it builds an “ecosystem” which will support the effort to utilize the data gathered from the connected Stellantis fleet.

Mobilisights and its partners will maintain a governance policy covering the use of anonymized and aggregated data, and only share customers’ personal data with their consent and only for the specific services of their choosing, Stellantis says.

Customers can opt out of information being collected, used or shared, even after they have given their consent. “The foundation of this whole business is trust,” says Ghate. “Trust in our custodianship of data and trust that we are here to create a better world.”

By establishing Mobilisights as an independent business unit, dedicated to growing data as a service business and developing and licensing B2B products, applications and services, Stellantis is taking another step toward its long-term goal of building out and expanding the software and data business outlined in the company’s Dare Forward strategic plan.

Ghate says Mobilisights has already established offices in Paris, Turin and Detroit and has support offices in India.

As it expands, the goal is to make Mobilisights products available to diverse entities, ranging from private enterprises to public-sector utilities and education and research institutions, while fostering data-driven decision making, Ghate says

The new company is one of the seven “accretive business units” announced in Stellantis’ Dare Forward plan, which includes growing its software and data business, according to Ghate. The strategy is expected to generate approximately €20 billion ($21.7 billion) in incremental annual revenues by 2030, Stellantis says.
