Ford Tries Skateboard Tech For Next-Gen BEV

Ford plans to develop its next generation BEV using architecture perfected for electric skateboards.
The powertrain will be based on a platform now being deployed by Rivian for its forthcoming R1T pick-up truck and R1S SUV. The platform puts battery pack, drive units, suspension, braking and thermal systems all below wheel height, a technique used on skateboards to lower the center of gravity. The vehicle will feature front double wishbone and rear multi-link suspension along with adaptive dampers and dynamic roll control.
Ford president and CEO Jim Hackett said: “As we continue in our transformation of Ford with new forms of intelligent vehicles and propulsion, this partnership with Rivian brings a fresh approach to both.”
The move follows Ford’s pledge to electrify all its European models. The automaker also announced a $500M equity investment in Rivian, subject to regulatory approval.
