Overwhelming impetus has pushed smartphone integration within in-vehicle infotainment systems as a top priority for those serious about telematics. Innovative offerings and partnerships from the likes of NAVTEQ, Nokia and Magneti Marelli have seen increased connection rates and a full range of smartphone features, services and applications made available through the existing screens and audio systems embedded in the car.

This enabling of information exchange between the smartphone and the vehicle, on areas such as fuel levels and engine status, as well as data retrieval through GPS functionality, enables location based services (LBS) and “connects the dots between the automotive and wireless world by enabling drivers to experience the best of both. It moves the market nearer to mass adoption of navigation and provides the opportunity to bring mobile and location-based services to a completely new group of consumers." (Bruno Bourguet of NAVTEQ)

Another innovation in the connected vehicle space is being poioneered by Alcatel Lucent and NG Connect, who have worked with Toyoata on the LTE Connected Car concept vehicle, described as a virtual "smartphone on wheels." The offerings of this truly connected car include combining a broadband radio link to bring cloud-based multimedia services into the car and a Wi-Fi environment.
