Ford Acquires Military Robotics Company in Autonomous Drive

Ford has turned to an US military robotics supplier to advance its ambitions in autonomous driving.

The automaker has acquired Michigan’s Quantum Signal which boasts extensive work developing robotic systems for the military and hopes to exploit the company’s real-time simulation software and machine learning capabilities. Some see simulation as a short-cut to perfecting autonomous technology for the road without the issues of real-world testing and challenges from regulators, while machine learning is the brains behind the array of sensors and radars on autonomous vehicles.

Additionally, the company has developed sensors and perception systems for autonomous functions, which will now be repurposed to achieve Ford’s goal of establishing a transportation-as-a-service business. The move will place the new acquisition under the same umbrella as Argo AI that has become the linchpin for both Ford and Volkswagen’s autonomous strategies.
