Fisker Uses Tech Conference for European Launch

US electric vehicle maker Fisker use the technology savvy audience of the Mobile World Congress for the European launch of its Ocean SUV.

CEO Henrik Fisker told the audience at the Barcelona conference that he had just been witnessing the first pre-production prototypes rolling off the Magna Plant in Austria where European models are expected to begin series production in November. Fisker also said that, top date, the company has received 33,000 advance orders for the car.

During the presentation, he also made great play over the car’s world first use of digital radar for its automated driving suite claiming its advance allows the system to identify the height of objects to distinguish between motorcycles and trucks. Fisker said this is possible because its technology is no more than 18 months old compared to the usual four years or so it takes other manufacturers to bring new technology to market.

The car will enter the European market priced competitively from €41,000 ($46,600) and claims segment leading range of up to 390 miles for the range topping Extreme version with a 0-62mph sprint time of just over 3 seconds. Fisker added: “Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is the ideal place to showcase the Fisker Ocean, as our vehicle is full of advanced technology, including over-the-air offerings that we will take to a new level. With the Fisker Ocean’s combination of performance, value and sustainability, I believe we have a unique electric vehicle with industry-first features, such as California Mode, a 17.1-inch rotating screen and the longest range in our segment. Europe is critical to the company’s success as we work towards building the most sustainable vehicle and starting production in November.”

The company is constructing its first European-based brand experience center in Munich, with plans for additional centers in other European countries. For service, the company is offering at-home vehicle pick-up, or Fisker Mobile Service, for customers who prefer technicians to come to them. The Fisker Ocean warranty also includes corrosion coverage and roadside assistance.
