Europe News: New traffic info service developed in Finland

ICT Turku Oy has developed a new traffic information service that will transmit details of driving conditions updates to a driver’s cell-phone.

At the beginning of his journey, a driver requests a map of his selected route, which is transmitted to his cell-phone complete with traffic jams, accidents, roadworks and other road conditions superimposed on the map.

The traffic service program monitors the vehicle’s progress via GPS, and retrieves updated map and traffic lane information at 5-10 minute intervals for the remaining part of the journey.

The service also suggests alternative routes, and provides corresponding information on these.

The prototype of the service developed by ICT Turku, Destia, AffectoGenimapi and TeliaSonera uses Destia’s constantly updated traffic warnings and the worldwide Tele Atlas maps.

The traffic service system has been tested on the Turku-Helsinki motorway, and a similar traffic info service developed by Motorola and Fiat has been tested in Turin.

This was all part of an EU-funded research and development project co-ordinated by Tele Atlas.
