Daimler Launching New Mercedes, EV/AV/CV Plans

Daimler is to premiere two new Mercedes-Benz cars and unveil its mobility and autonomous, connected, and electric vehicle plans at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019.

The new Mercedes-Benz EQC, which is the EQ series’ first fully battery electric production line car and Daimler claims symbolizes the beginning of its “new mobility era”, will receive its US premiere at the event. The CLA Coupé, which the automaker says features an updated version of its MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment system, will make its US debut at the event. It claims “MBUX Interior Assistant that identifies operation requests on the basis of movements … augmented reality for navigation, and the ability to understand indirect voice commands” among its new features.

Daimler vice-president of digital vehicles and mobility Sajjad Khan will use the event to outline the state of play regarding the automaker’s Connected, Autonomous, Shared & service, and Electric drive (CASE) program. Daimler Trucks will also give a presentation on what progress towards autonomous trucks the division is purporting to have made.

Daimler will also launch Vision URBANETIC at CES. The automaker says this is a “mobility concept … based on an autonomously driving, electrically driven chassis suitable for bodies intended to transport passengers or cargo”. It claims the platform enables public transit authorities, hauliers, and citizens to “digitally send their transport requests across urban environments”, thereby lowering traffic levels. Daimler says the URBANETIC demonstration car will show how the platform’s user experience and user interface designs allow the platform to function driverlessly.
