CES News: Samsung plans to put digital TV in cars

Samsung has revealed a technology that will let local TV stations broadcast digital programs to phones or car TVs.

This is good news for car passengers who currently receive analogue TV broadcasts on portable TV, since these analogue broadcasts will end in the US in 2009.

Advanced vestigal side band (A-VSB) broadcasts are delivered on the same frequencies as regular digital broadcasting in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Samsung says that the key to A-VSB is that the signal uses the same frequency as regular digital broadcasts, meaning it should be relatively cheap to adopt.

According to a CNet News report, Samsung will submit the technology to a standards body in the first half of this year, and aims to introduce the products in 2008.
