BMW Launches Track Day Infotainment in M8 Coupe

The ‘driver’s’ car brand BMW has targeted track-day junkies with an infotainment system geared to help them set personal best times.

It has unveiled the new display and control system for its high-end M8 Coupe and M8 Convertible expected to market later this year. The infotainment display allows drivers to tweak settings to their liking, including long-distance comfort settings, chassis options, and adjusting powertrain delivery to the both the road conditions and personal preference.

Because the car is part of BMW’s performance ‘M’ series, drivers also get access to what the German automaker is calling ‘M Mode’, allowing the displays and the driver assistance aids to be configured to the driver’s requirements. The ‘regular’ M8 Coupe has Road and Sport modes, while the Competition variants have an extra ‘Track’ mode, designed exclusively for use on the race track. These different modes alter the information shown to the driver on screen and the safety features, such as steering and braking assistance, are reduced to the bare minimum in Sport mode or deactivated altogether for Track.

While Road has all the usual safety and assistance features expected in a premium vehicle, Sport mode is where it gets interesting. All braking and steering interventions are disabled, with the driver assistance features toned down, now only transmitting alerts on speed limits and overtaking restrictions. M View is also activated on the dashboard and head-up display, with information about the car’s condition, such as coolant temperature, tire wear, and longitudinal and lateral acceleration are shown to the right and left of the instrument cluster. Extra information featuring an engine speed dial, rev shift lifts, currently engaged gear, a digital speed display, navigation and other important information are shown on the heads-up display.

As a M car, the engine, suspension and steering can all be independently set up, allowing for personal tastes and needs to be met for a variety for drivers and driving styles. In addition, with the optional M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the distribution of power going to the front and rear axles can also be configured, giving drivers even more control.

BMW is also pioneering a new braking system in the M8, combining the vacuum-free brake booster, brake activation, and braking control functions into one module for the first time, reducing overall weight by around 4.4-lbs. The required brake pressure is an electric actuator, meaning the car can predetermine how much brake pressure is needed, ahead of time, and also means the stability control can kick in much quicker if it is called upon.
