Asia News: India to allocate 3G spectrum

India’s Dept of Telecommunications (DoT) will soon allocate spectrum for 3G services.

DOT secretary Dinesh Mathur said that the department is considering two allocation options:

  • Auction, as recommended by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Foreign players would be allowed to bid for 3G licences
  • Allotment, as done for 2G operators. A set of criteria has been prepared to shortlist operators.

Initially, only four operators can be accommodated for 3G services. One slot would be reserved for public sector BSNL or MTNL.
