Asia News: Hong Kong makes live traffic available to PDA users

PDA users in Hong Kong can now view real-time traffic conditions, courtesy of the Transport Dept’s CCTV coverage.

The free service, which covers traffic conditions across Hong Kong, is part of a six-month trial scheme.

The arrangement will be reviewed towards the end of the trial period.

Assistant Commissioner for Transport, Tsang King-man, said that with the advancements in technology and the popularity of 3G mobile services, the department is collaborating with the private sector to provide more traffic information to the community.

Maps for main roads in Kowloon and the New Territories South will also be uploaded to the department's website to help drivers choose their route.

On January 12, the Legislative Council approved funding for the implementation of the Journey Time Indication System in Kowloon. Six sets of journey time indicators will be installed in advance of the critical traffic divergent points on Kowloon approach roads to the three harbour crossings. The project will start before end-2007, for completion in mid-2009.
