America News: Quebec to legalise sat nav by year-end
According to a CanWest News report, Quebec is expected to modify its provincial highway code to allow the legal use of GPS devices in vehicles.
Quebec is the only jurisdiction on the continent where GPS or other navigation systems using screens are illegal for motorists, emergency vehicles excepted.
A spokesperson for Quebec’s agency regulating highway safety acknowledged that GPS devices are increasingly becoming a standard feature in vehicles, and improvements in the technology make sat nav less of a distraction for drivers.
