America News: Autonet Mobile turns cars into mobile Wi-Fi hotspots

Autonet Mobile is the first ISP to focus on vehicles, with a new product designed to turn the car into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

Autonet Mobile is the first ever always-on mobile broadband network for vehicles. Using the company’s patent-pending TRU technology, the service covers 95% of the US, providing an uninterrupted secure connection which, the company says, will not drop even when the vehicle is travelling through tunnels.

The company is also about to announce an agreement with Avis Rent-A-Car, that will see Avis offering rental customers portable notebook PCs to make use of the Autonet Mobile service.

According to a report in the International Herald Tribune, analysts remain sceptical about the company’s claims to be able to offer a totally uninterrupted mobile Internet service, saying that there are some fundamental limitations with wireless technology that have yet to be overcome, and that while Autonet may have found a way to reduce the number of dropped connections, it cannot eliminate them altogether with current cellular technology.
